Scientific community has been making significant breakthroughs in genetic engineering. Recently US scientists have managed to edit genes in a human embryo to repair a genetic mutation. This is aimed at preventing diseases occurring as a result of mutation. Nevertheless, it also attracted widespread opposition from the groups who fear that these studies will eventually be directed towards designer babies. So they call for a blanket ban on the studies related to genetic engineering of human embryos.

In the light of the above subject –

  1. Discuss the ethical issues involved.
  2. If you were given the authority, what will be your policy decision on this matter and why?
