Committee on Data Protection Framework

  • Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology constituted a Committee under the Chairmanship of Justice B N Srikrishna to suggest a draft Data Protection Bill.
  • The Committee will study and identify key data protection issues and recommend methods for addressing them.
  • It will recommend a framework for securing personal data in the increasingly digitised economy and also address privacy concerns.

Mission XI Million

  • It is a joint programme of Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and All India Football Federation and FIFA to popularise Football across the country.
  • The programme targets to reach 11 Million boys and girls across the country for promotion of football by 30th September 2017.
  • It is to make football as the sport of choice in India, to encourage children gain healthy habits and learn important life lessons in teamwork and sportsman spirit.

Panel on Fair Market Conduct

  • SEBI has constituted a committee headed by T K Viswanathan on ‘fair market conduct’.
  • The committee has been tasked with suggesting improvements to the existing SEBI norms, fraudulent and unfair trade practices (FUTP).
  • It has been specifically asked to look at handling of price-sensitive information during takeovers and aligning of insider-trading rules with provisions of the Companies Act.

Silver Nanoparticles

  • A recent study by Researchers found that incorporation of silver nano particles in packing material can enhance the shelf-life of vegetables and fruits.
  • When Silver Nanoparticles are impregnated into cellulosic food packets, they could preserve vegetables at room temperatures for as long as 21 days.
  • They have anti-microbial properties and it is capable of controlling the growth of a food-born bacterium called Aeromonas hydrophila.
  • They also have an average size of 35 nm, so there is least chance of migration of silver ions into food.
  • The method of impregnating it in packaging material is cost effective.

Earth Overshoot Day

  • Earth Overshoot Day (EOD) means the day when human consumption exceeds the earth’s capacity in that particular year to regenerate natural resources.
  • It is the day the world completely consumes all the natural resources produced that year.
  • It is calculated by Global Footprint Network.
  • August 2, 2017 is the Earth Overshoot Day of the year 2017.
  • Since 1987, the EOD has been moving up the calendar, from December 19 in 1987 to August 2, 2017.
  • Just seven months into the year, the world has consumed all the natural resources, reveals the shocking rate at which environmental degradation is taking place.

Global Footprint Network

  • Global Footprint Network, founded in 2003, is an independent think tank originally based in the United States, Belgium and Switzerland.
  • It is headquartered in Oakland, California.
  • Its mission is to help end ecological overshoot by making ecological limits central to decision-making.
  • Every year, it produces National Footprint Accounts, which calculate Ecological Footprint and bio capacity of more than 200 countries.

Bharatmala Project

  • It is an umbrella project under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways that will subsume unfinished parts of National Highway Development Program (NHDP).
  • It focuses on the new initiatives like development of Border and International connectivity roads, Coastal & port connectivity roads, National Corridors Efficiency improvements, Economic corridors development and others.
  • The Public Investment Board has cleared the proposal for Bharatmala Pariyojana Phase-I.
