KEY POINTS

Integration

·         Integration in Tri-services implies synergized and integrated employment of resources of the three services to achieve the desired results in the least possible time.

·         It implies enmeshing the three services together at different levels and placing them under one commander for execution of operational plans.

Necessity

·         To avoid duplication of effort

·         To ensure unity of command

·         To enhance optimum utilisation of available resources

·         To improve the effectiveness and success rate of military operations

·         To promote economy of effort

·         To give a clear idea of capabilities and limitations in armed forces

Challenges

·         Inter-services rivalry

·         Insecurity among the services

·         Army’s dominance

·         Transient political commitment

·         Bureaucratic delays

Solutions

·         Change in mindset of tri-services that, they are different only in colours, but not in the ultimate cause they intended to serve for.

·         Even though India’s primary threats are still on land, India’s development as a regional power obligates it to work on both air and sea.

·         Thus dominant-free integrated tri-services are a vital one.

·         A strong political commitment will serve for the integration.

·         Creating integrated commands similar to Andaman & Nicobar Command (ANC) will wipe out the fear of dominance among the trio.
