Nagorno-Karabakh

• Nagorno-Karabakh also known as Artsakh by Armenians, is a landlocked mountainous area in the South Caucasus.
• The region includes the northeastern flank of the Karabakh Range of the Lesser Caucasus and Kura River.
• The peaks of the Karabakh Range conclude in Mount Gyamysh.
• It was claimed by both Azerbaijan and Armenia after the fall of the Russian Empire in 1917.
• The territory is internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but its inhabitants are predominantly ethnic Armenians.
• The people have their own government that enjoyed close links to the government in neighboring Armenia but has not been officially recognized by it or other U.N. member states.
• Armenians are Christians and Azerbaijan’s inhabitants are mostly Muslims.
• Azerbaijan had established a checkpoint recently at the start of the Lachin corridor, the only land route linking Armenia to Nagorno-Karabakh.

One Earth One Health

• The approach that acknowledges the interconnectedness of animals, humans, and the environment is referred to as One Health.
• The concept of One Health was first recognized in 2004 at the One World, One Health symposium.
• Framework - India’s ‘One Health’ vision derives its blueprint from the agreement between the tripartite-plus alliance comprising
  • The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)
  • The World Organization for Animal Health (OIE)
  • The World Health Organization (WHO) (and)
  • The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)
• It is a global initiative supported by the UNICEF and the World Bank under the overarching goal of contributing to One World, One Health.

National Institute for One Health (NIOH)

• It is an autonomous and statutory body with a mandate to fulfil the obligations under the International Health Regulations (IHR).
• The NIOH, previously called the Centre for One Health, was set up as a satellite centre under the National Institute of Virology, Pune.
• It needs to coordinate with the other ministries.

Pulicat Lake

• It is the second largest brackish water ecosystem in the country after the Chilika Lake in Odisha.
• It is located on the borders of Andhra Pradesh and Tamilnadu.
• Major part of the lagoon comes under Andhra Pradesh.
• The barrier island of Sriharikota separates the lagoon from the Bay of Bengal and is home to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.
• The Buckingham canal is a navigation channel located on the western side of this lagoon.
• The lagoon is one of the three important wetlands to attract northeast monsoon rain.
• Flamingo festival will be held in this lake every year.
• The lagoon encompasses the Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary.
• It is designated as a marine protected area.
• Every year so many migratory birds visit the lake includes Flamingos, herons, painted storks, pelicans, kingfishers, ducks, spoonbills and whimbrels.

United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII)

• It is a Permanent Forum under United Nations (UN).
• It is an advisory body to the Economic and Social Council established by resolution, July 2000.
• Aim - It mandates to discuss indigenous issues related to economic and social development, culture, the environment, education, health and human rights.
• It holds annual two-week sessions.
• The Permanent Forum is one of 3 UN bodies that is mandated to deal specifically with indigenous peoples issues.
• The others are the Expert Mechanism on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Special Rapporteur Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
• The experts nominated by governments are elected by ECOSOC based on the five regional groupings (Africa; Asia; Eastern Europe; Latin America and the Caribbean; and Western Europe and Other States).
• The Permanent Forum’s engagement and role in promoting indigenous peoples rights are made possible through the Trust Fund on Indigenous Issues.

Azores High

• It is also called Bermuda high.
• It is an atmospheric high-pressure centre that develops over the subtropical region of the eastern North Atlantic Ocean during the winter and spring seasons in the Northern Hemisphere.
• It is a subtropical high-pressure cell that moves westward during the summer and fall, when it is known as the Bermuda High.
• In summer position, the high creates a southwest flow of warm tropical air toward the East Coast of the United States.
