KEY POINTS

A tectonic plate (also called lithosphere plate) is a massive, irregularly shaped slab of solid rock, generally composed of both continental and oceanic lithosphere. These plates move horizontally over the asthenosphere as rigid units. Continents are part of a plate and what moves is the plate.

Formation of Himalayas

·        The Tethys sea formed between Indo-austral plate and Eurasian plate gets consumed due to process of subduction during Ocean-Continent convergence.

·        As the oceanic plate get consumed, the process is then followed by Continent – Continent convergence, where the sediments formed during the subduction process gets piled up.

·        The piled up sediments gets compressed intensively between Indo-austral plate and Eurasian plate and gets squeezed to for Himalayan Mountains, which is a fold mountain.

·        The Indo-austral plate is moving towards Eurasian plate causing the sediments to squeeze further the fold mountains tend to grow higher.

·        Recently China and Nepal reported that Mount Everest in Himalayas have grown 0.86cm higher when compared with data collected in 1954, now the height of the mountain is 8848.86 metres.
