KEY POINTS

Economic potential of Camels

·         Traditionally, it helps in transportation & farm works in desert and arid areas.

·         It is one of the major farm animals which survive in an inhospitable environment during droughts.

·         Yields more milk for a longer period than most milch animals under harsh conditions.

·         Its milk is of distinct quality and having therapeutic traits.

·         For example, In Europe and some other countries, camel milk is already sold as functional food, or nutraceutical, at premium prices.

·         It provides milk without consuming water for up to three weeks and subsisting on just remnants of vegetation.

·         It has the longest lactation period and its milk has a relatively longer shelf life.

How it can be an effective Poverty reduction strategy?

·         With the growing use of mechanised transport, the camel’s demand has been considerably waning.

·         Appreciation of its role as a milk producer can be a better strategy to tackle both the problems of rising poverty and dwindling camel population.

·         Since it is a family based business, participation of women will be more which empowers them both socially & economically.

·         Proper domestic trade and export of camel’s milk and its products would help India to attain its aim to double farmers’ income by 2022.

·         Higher production of camels’ milk will ensure food security of downtrodden and the destitutes’.

How it could be achieved?

·         Encourage farmers to form self-help groups, farmers’ producer companies or cooperatives to undertake the domestic trade and export of camel milk and its products.

·         Create proper processing and value addition centres.

·         Encourage start-ups to market camel milk and its products through e-marketing. It will generate more employment opportunities.

Way forward

·         Governments in collaboration with the scientists should take steps to boost the inherent milk-yielding potential of Indian camels and to develop various technologies to manufacture value-added products from their milk.
