Why in news?

A European Union delegation will be visiting Delhi shortly for the 14th Indo-EU summit.

What are the expectations?

  • The EU parliament had resolved recently that the EU-India partnership has immense potential for growth.
  • They called upon Brussels and New Delhi to enhance their efforts in promoting effective, rule-based collaboration across domains.
  • Trade, investment, innovation, education, science & technology is expected to rank high on the agenda.
  • Both need to work for giving better market access to the other.
  • Also, given the current global environment, it is vital that such tactical cooperation is also given a strategic & democratic direction.
  • Protecting the established international principles & reforming institutions to suit current realities are two key areas.
  • Greater coordination in the security aspect is another area that needs improvement.

How does the future look?

  • Rooted in its democratic institutions and open societies, the Indian and European world views very similar.
  • This has resonated in their vision for Eurasian connectivity – both have voiced for financially sustainable & truly multilateral projects.
  • They have identical stands in issues concerning freedom of navigation and many other multi-lateral issues.
  • As the world’s two largest democratic regions, India & Europe need to develop a shared liberal vision for a transformed global order.
