KEY POINTS

Reasons for increasing Anti-Indian sentiments

·         Impact of China as an alternative

·         Blockade due to concerns in Nepal Constitution

·         Insensitive Indian media

·         Big brother attitude perception

·         Alienated younger generation of Nepal

·         Indo-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship

·         Deep-seated suspicion about India’s interference in Nepal’s internal affairs

How India can recalibrate?

·         Updating the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship.

·         It will be the deliverables, such as road and railway links, power projects and post-earthquake reconstruction commitments, which will determine the success of the partnership, not just the announcement of new initiatives.

·         India has residual concerns over enhancing the constitution’s provisions for Nepal’s plains-based Madhesi population, but these should be taken up discreetly and diplomatically.

·         India needs to also realise the new reality that its monopoly over geopolitics in Nepal is over, and there is another relationship that Nepal is nurturing.

·         It is time for India to be proactive and redefine its engagement rather than continue to be reactive.

·         The way India has been flexible with the Eminent Persons Group (EPG) meetings is a good signal.
